Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away at the age of 85. Cullen died on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by his family, as confirmed by a statement from his family.

Born in Montreal, Cullen embarked on his career in Canadian television and radio before becoming a defining voice in the world of animation. He first lent his voice to the character of Optimus Prime in the 1984 Transformers animated series. His portrayal of the beloved Autobot leader continued in seven major Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, as well as various spin-offs. Cullen also endeared himself to audiences as Eeyore, the gloomy yet lovable donkey from Winnie the Pooh, a role he reprised in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous subsequent projects.

In addition to these roles, Cullen’s voice brought to life several other memorable characters. He voiced KARR, the malevolent counterpart to KITT, in the popular series Knight Rider. His talent extended to creating the distinctive clicking sounds of the alien hunter in the 1987 film Predator, and he also provided the voice of King Kong in the 1976 film remake.

Peter Cullen often credited his older brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, with influencing the development of Optimus Prime’s character. Larry urged him to portray the character as a true hero, someone who embodies strength without aggression. This guidance helped Cullen shape the personality that resonated with fans worldwide.

Throughout his illustrious career, Cullen’s work earned him numerous accolades, including a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his role as Optimus Prime. In 2023, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. His legacy endures as his voice became synonymous with some of the most beloved animated and science-fiction characters, securing his place in the annals of popular culture.
