French Solidarity Statement Emphasizes Borders Cannot Change by Force

by admin477351

France has joined the growing chorus of European nations supporting Denmark against President Trump’s Greenland ambitions, with foreign ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux declaring that “borders cannot be changed by force” and expressing French “solidarity” with Copenhagen. The French statement represents another element of the remarkable European unity that has emerged in response to Trump’s territorial designs on the Arctic territory.

Confavreux’s emphasis on the illegitimacy of forcible border changes reflects core principles of international law that have governed European relations since World War II. His statement came as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any US military action against Greenland would completely destroy NATO and eighty years of transatlantic security cooperation. France’s position aligns with declarations from the European Union, Britain, and Nordic nations all supporting Denmark’s territorial integrity.

President Trump has justified his Greenland ambitions through national security arguments, claiming Denmark cannot adequately protect the strategically vital territory. Greenland occupies the shortest missile route between Russia and the Unite States, hosts an American military base, and possesses vast untapped rare earth mineral deposits. Additionally, melting Arctic ice is opening new shipping routes that enhance the territory’s strategic and economic value.

The European solidarity with Denmark has intensified following Trump’s military intervention in Venezuela, where American forces seized President Nicolas Maduro and announced indefinite US control over the nation’s oil resources. This aggressive precedent has amplified concerns that Trump might employ similar tactics against Greenland despite Denmark’s NATO membership. Trump indicated he would prioritize the Greenland issue within two months while suggesting discussions could begin in approximately three weeks.

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen publicly demanded Trump cease his pressure campaign and respect international law, while maintaining openness to dialogue through proper diplomatic channels. The crisis escalated when Katie Miller, wife of Trump adviser Stephen Miller, posted imagery depicting Greenland in American flag colors, which Nielsen condemned as disrespectful. Trump’s claims about Chinese and Russian naval activity near Greenland were rejected by Beijing and disputed by Greenland’s parliamentary representative as fabrications designed to justify American territorial expansion.
