In a significant diplomatic encounter, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. This marks the first dialogue between the foreign ministers of Russia and Germany since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began.
The meeting was crucial as it aimed to address ongoing tensions and various issues impacting the bilateral relationship between Russia and Germany. Discussions revolved around the war in Ukraine, with German officials reiterating Berlin’s firm stance on the conflict. Wadephul emphasized Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine, calling for an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to establish lasting peace.
The talks unfolded amid heightened tensions following Germany’s accusations against Russia regarding an alleged attempt to target two cargo planes at Leipzig airport in August using an explosive-laden drone. This incident has further strained relations between the two nations.
This meeting between Lavrov and Wadephul follows Lavrov’s last engagement with a German foreign minister in January 2022, when he met then-Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock shortly before the invasion of Ukraine.
