AI Memory Chip Advances Pose Potential Geopolitical Challenges, Warns SK Group

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has highlighted the potential for a geopolitical challenge arising from the global shortage of AI memory chips, as demand continues to surpass supply. He pointed out that governments are increasingly viewing access to these advanced chips as critical to economic security, suggesting that international pressure to secure supplies could soon intensify.

Chey noted a significant increase in demand, with customers projected to require between 60% and 100% more AI memory chips by 2027 compared to current levels. Despite this surge, the expansion of production capacity remains constrained. The most acute shortages are being seen in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a crucial element for AI processors.

To meet the rising demand, SK hynix is ramping up investments in new manufacturing facilities within South Korea and considering potential sites abroad, including in the United States. Chey underscored the urgency of swiftly expanding production capabilities to sustain South Korea’s leadership in the semiconductor sector. He warned that failure to do so could lead to prolonged high prices, inviting new competitors and potentially destabilizing the global market.

The escalating need for AI memory chips has placed significant pressure on existing infrastructure, further complicating the situation. By investing in new facilities, SK hynix aims to address these challenges head-on and secure its competitive edge in the evolving landscape of semiconductor technology. Chey’s comments underscore the broader implications for economic and national security as countries navigate the complexities of supply chain management in this vital industry.
