Diplomatic sources reveal that some European partners are uneasy about Japan’s recent interactions with Russian officials, suggesting that such engagement could undermine efforts to isolate Russia. In May, Japanese officials from the foreign and trade ministries, as well as representatives from major business organizations, traveled to Russia to meet with officials overseeing economic development and industry. Their discussions were centered around economic matters and the interests of Japanese businesses operating within Russia.
Japanese authorities have defended these interactions, asserting the importance of keeping communication channels open, even amidst strained relations. They emphasized that the talks were aimed at safeguarding the assets and operations of Japanese companies still active in the Russian market.
