South Korea and Japan have reiterated their commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, agreeing to broaden their security cooperation amidst escalating regional tensions. During defense discussions held in Seoul, South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back and his Japanese counterpart, Shinjiro Koizumi, concurred on enhancing regional peace and stability through strengthened bilateral cooperation and partnerships with the United States.
The two nations decided to revive joint search-and-rescue exercises and bolster military exchanges, including collaboration between their air forces’ aerobatic teams. This development represents a further step in improving defense ties after years of strained relations due to historical disputes. As South Korea and Japan strive to deepen security cooperation, their efforts are particularly focused on countering North Korea’s nuclear activities and addressing the increasing military ties between North Korea and Russia.
In addition to defense collaboration, South Korea and Japan have engaged in discussions concerning cooperation in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and joint military exercises.
