Vietnam has underscored its expanding role in enhancing cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, following the conclusion of the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Vietnam’s Foreign Minister, Lê Hoài Trung, emphasized the country’s significant contributions to the summit’s success, highlighting efforts to promote ASEAN’s central role while bolstering the strategic partnership with Russia.
Heading the Vietnamese delegation, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng focused on advancing dialogue, cooperation, and peaceful dispute resolution, underscoring the importance of adhering to international law. Vietnam proposed expanding collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These suggestions were integrated into the new frameworks adopted at the summit, which aim to strengthen ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with a particular emphasis on energy as a cornerstone of this partnership.
Further demonstrating its commitment to fostering future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced its intention to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This initiative reflects Vietnam’s dedication to nurturing future diplomatic relations and enhancing cooperation across the region.
In discussions on the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their discussions focused on expanding cooperation across various fields, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed that the outcomes of the summit would contribute to strengthening ASEAN–Russia relations, enhancing regional stability, and creating new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian region. The commitments and proposals set forth during the summit are expected to provide significant momentum for the continued development of these strategic ties.
