Zelenskyy Criticizes Trump’s Pause on Russia Sanctions, Warns of War Extension

by admin477351

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has criticized the decision by the Trump administration to pause new sanctions against Russia, warning that this move could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin and prolong the war in Ukraine. Zelenskyy expressed concerns that the suspension of sanctions effectively rewards Moscow and undermines efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

The U.S. decision to delay the implementation of new sanctions, which were set to impose additional restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network, has raised alarms in Kyiv. The proposed sanctions also included provisions for tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil, such as China and India. The Trump administration reportedly paused these measures for 60 days to evaluate their impact on the global economy and American interests.

While the decision has been welcomed by Russian officials, it has prompted concerns in Ukraine about the U.S.’s commitment to maintaining pressure on Russia. Zelenskyy urged the United States to reconsider its position and called on European nations to engage diplomatically with Russia to address the situation.

The Ukrainian president’s remarks come amid intensified Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with more than 15 major electricity generation and transmission facilities reportedly damaged ahead of winter. These strikes have heightened fears of power shortages and the strain on Ukrainian cities’ ability to maintain essential services. Zelenskyy emphasized the increased pressure on Ukraine’s air defense systems, which are struggling to intercept missiles and drones, and called for continued international support to protect critical infrastructure and civilians.

Additionally, Zelenskyy raised concerns about restrictions on Starlink satellite internet services used by Ukrainian forces, noting that these limitations are affecting military operations, including drone activities.

The situation underscores growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over sanctions, military support, and strategies for ending the conflict. Zelenskyy insists that sustained pressure on Russia is crucial for achieving lasting peace, warning that reducing restrictions while attacks persist could ultimately extend the war.
