The InterContinental Phuket Resort has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first InterContinental property in Thailand to receive Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification. This accomplishment positions it as the third property under IHG Hotels & Resorts in Thailand to gain this prestigious recognition for sustainability. Certification was carried out through an independent audit by Control Union Certifications, a GSTC-accredited body, evaluating the resort’s approach to sustainable management, socioeconomic and cultural impacts, and environmental performance.
Efforts at the resort focus on water and energy conservation, reducing food waste, sourcing locally, and community outreach in Phuket. An innovative food-waste program utilizing an Oklin Food Waste Composter is a standout feature, capable of processing around 125 kilograms of food waste daily, converting it into fertilizer. This system can shrink waste by 80-90% in just 24 hours, yielding about 360 kilograms of fertilizer monthly for local farms, schools, and gardens. Additionally, AI-based food-waste monitoring helps culinary teams manage portions, purchasing, and inventory more effectively.
The resort’s sustainability initiatives extend to Kamala Beach through the Proud Kamala program, which aims to maintain the three-kilometer coastline and minimize marine waste. Support for the Ocean For All Foundation’s “License to Clean” initiative includes deploying a coastal-cleaning catamaran to collect waste from nearby waters for recycling and disposal. Water conservation is vital, with roughly 80% of irrigation needs met through treated wastewater, complemented by rainwater harvesting to lessen reliance on potable water sources.
The property boasts LEED Gold certification, with energy-saving strategies like LED lighting, motion sensors, and energy monitoring contributing to approximately 25% energy savings. Local sourcing is integral to the resort’s sustainability strategy, involving partnerships with over 19 farmers and communities across Thailand, including Phang Nga, some of whom utilize fertilizer from the resort’s composting efforts. Collaborations with Chulalongkorn and Kasetsart Universities at Sipping Tiger include crafting cocktails from locally sourced botanicals and plants, optimizing resources that would otherwise be underutilized.
General Manager Bjorn Courage highlighted that the GSTC certification validates the resort’s sustainability practices and provides a framework for future improvements in environmental and community programs. Located on Kamala Beach, the InterContinental Phuket Resort offers 221 rooms, suites, and villas, alongside a range of guest amenities, including restaurants, bars, wellness facilities, and swimming pools.
