A Russian tanker, named Universal, carrying approximately 270,000 barrels of diesel fuel, has reportedly altered its course after initially setting sail for Cuba. The tanker, which left the Russian port of Vistino in April, was seen drifting for weeks in the Sargasso Sea northeast of the Caribbean. It has now redirected towards Brazil, according to maritime tracking data.
Initially, the vessel was supposed to deliver its cargo to Cuba, a nation currently grappling with severe fuel shortages and persistent electricity blackouts. The ship’s listed destination was later updated to “For order,” a maritime term used when a vessel is awaiting new instructions regarding its final destination.
The Universal is operating under sanctions from multiple Western nations, including the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Canada. Reports indicate that during its journey, the tanker was escorted through various segments by Russian naval vessels before entering the Atlantic Ocean.
Economic pressures on Cuba have increased as the United States continues to push for political and economic reforms in the country. This year, only one Russian tanker has successfully delivered oil supplies to Cuba, and those supplies have already been depleted, exacerbating the island’s energy crisis.
Tensions between the United States and Cuba have escalated recently, notably following US legal actions against former Cuban leader Raúl Castro related to the 1996 shootdown of aircraft belonging to the humanitarian group Brothers to the Rescue. In a move that adds to the rising tensions, the US has recently deployed the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and its strike group toward the region.
